Studying lemons... another Mini Master
The more I look at still life paintings the more I admire them. I had a phase of painting lemons and decided to look for an example of a really good lemon. I found what I was looking for in a painting by Jan Davidsz. de Heem: Herring and Onions, with a Glass of Beer, Lemon, Grapes and Orange, painted in the 1650s.The image can be viewed here. Lemons were a status symbol at that time, a luxury product. I decided to paint the detail of the lemon as a Mini Master. I only had the image to go on and it certainly was a challenge to depict the curling peel and translucency of the flesh.
